Pinup hairstyles are as integral to a perfect burlesque outfit as feather fans and killer stockings. Don’t know how to be a pinup girl? Easy! Check out a few of these tips for creating pinup hairstyles that will complement your burlesque costume.

Look One: Bumper Bangs

Cherry Dollface has a great video tutorial for creating classic bumper bangs. Here’s a quick overview of how she does it:

First, separate the section of hair that you will use to create the bangs. There should be enough hair to comfortably cover a hair rat. Brush the section of hair to make it smooth, and then roll the hair around the center of a hair rat. Hair rats are used to give hair shape and volume, and they make a great investment for a burlesque dancer, as they can be used to create a number of pinup hairstyles.

Once the hair is rolled tightly around the hair rat, pin the rat in place securely. Next, spread the hair across the hair rat until it’s fully covered. From there, add curls to the rest of your hair, and you’re all set! Pair this look with some vintage inspired lingerie for a great retro burlesque outfit.

Look Two: Victory Rolls

First, section off the hair you intend to roll, and then pull it away from your head. Rat the back of the section with a comb, and spray with hairspray. Next, smooth the front section with the comb and hold the section out almost to the end.

From here, begin your roll, curling the hair in toward your head. Once the roll is the sufficient size and shape, secure it with a bobby pin. From there, add more pins inside the hair until the roll is entirely secured. Once the roll is in place, smooth with a comb and spray with a good hairspray. From here, complete the same steps on the other side of your head. To finish the look, rat the back of the section between the rolls to ensure there’s no gap from behind.

Look Three: Sailor/Nurse Pinup Hair

Pin up Hairstyles for Medium Hair 2013: This is a great look for a themed burlesque outfit. First, curl the hair except for the bangs. For people with thicker hair, it may be a good idea to separate top and bottom bangs, but those with thinner hair may not require this step. Next, roll the bangs into a large pin curl and secure it in place with pins. Spray the hair to set the shape. From here, just pin in your hat, and you’re ready to go!

Pin up Girl Hairstyles for Long hair 2013

Pin up Girl Hairstyles for Long hair 2013

It might be said the golden age of pinup girls was also the golden age of hairstyles. The pinup girls of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s were every man's fantasy and every school girl's aspiration. And their hair was all about the curl. With setting lotions, curlers and pins, they created hair that was glamorous and feminine. In doing so, they set trends that never truly go out of style. Does this Spark an idea?

Finger Waves

Pin up Girl Hairstyles for Long hair 2013: The hairstyles of the 1930s had to meet the following criteria: soften the blunt cut of the bob and fit nicely beneath the most fashionable hat of the day. They accomplished these goals with finger waves. Shorter cuts do better with this style, but it takes considerable practice. Part damp hair on the side or in the center and apply a waving or setting lotion, combing through for an even application. Basically, section your hair--from the top down--and use your comb and fingers to shape your hair into a wave. You need to hold each section for a few seconds for it to set. When mastered, the result will be beautiful, deep waves.

Peek-a-Boo Bang

Film actress Veronica Lake started the craze known as the Peek-a-Boo Bang. To attain the look, you must first have long, smooth locks, preferably with gentle waves. Part your hair on the left side, softly curl the ends and let the right side hang over your right eye. This style is, of course, all about the glamour and nothing at all about practicality.

Victory Rolls

With World War II in full swing, women did not have the means to attain the latest clothing fashions. Therefore hair became their statement of style. Victory rolls are the most prominent example. This hairstyle was named after a plane maneuver; when styled without bangs, it also resembles a V-shape. For this style, part your hair in the center, asymmetrically, or with an extreme side part for dramatic effect. You want your hair to have a bit of bounce, so add some body with curls. Then section off the sides of your hair, brush it out, roll it up and in to create rolls atop your head, and pin.

Bettie Page

Pinup icon Bettie Page was known for her curves--and her long, black hair with thick bangs cut straight across. To copy her hairstyle, that's basically all you need. You can wear your hair down, with soft waves, with Victory Rolls or pinned up on one side with a hair accessory.

Rockabilly

Pin up Girl Hairstyles for Long hair 2013: Today, Rockabilly refers to a subculture, people bound by their love of retro fashions. The term was originally derived from early rock and roll music of the 1940s and 1950s. In regard to hairstyles, it's all about making a statement. The key is volume and height on top, with sides close to the head (think pompadour). From there, you can pull your hair back into a ponytail, curl and pin it up, or add hair accessories.

Pin up Girls Hairstyles 2013

Pin up Girls Hairstyles 2013

Pin up Girls Hairstyles 2013: As any glam girl can guess, past styles always come back to haunt the present. This is no different when it comes to hairstyling trends, which cycle through the popular vintage looks every few years. But you don't need to be a trendsetter to try out the vintage style of your dreams. Got a penchant for pin-up? Or are you feeling ready for rockabilly? Seek no further than pin-up style icon Bettie Page, whose hot hair will have you hankerin' for a whole new look.

1. Brush out your bangs and lightly spray them with hairspray to help them hold the set.

2. Separate the bangs into a top and bottom layer, using a comb. If you have thin or wispy bangs, use just a single layer of hair.

3. Heat up your curling iron. Clamp the top layer of your bangs into the curler, and roll them under. Hold the iron there for a few seconds, then release the hair. Pin the curl to your head with a few bobby pins.

4. Curl the bottom layer of your bangs with the curling iron, just like you did in Step 3. Pin this curl to your head with bobby pins. Leave the bangs alone for now.

5. Choose a curl style for the rest of your hair. Bettie Page-inspired styles today range from super-straight to crazy curls, so decide which way you want to go. If you're straightening your hair, use a big roller brush and a hairdryer to get a smooth look. Like the curls? Keep on going Pin up Girls Hairstyles 2013.

6. Run a handful of styling mousse through your hair. Take a 1-inch section of moussed hair and roll it up into the curling iron. Hold the iron still for a few seconds, then slide the curl off the iron. Bobby pin the curl to your head.

7. Repeat Step 6 all over your head. Lightly spray all the curls with hairspray.

8. Take the bobby pins out of your bangs. Gently smooth the layers together with your fingers.

9. Spray the bangs with hairspray again and lightly tease the underside. Smooth out the bangs with the brush, in the direction of the curl.

10. Let the rest of your curls down and comb them out with your fingers. If they are too curly for your tastes, gently run the brush through them. Otherwise, give your hair another dusting of hairspray and you're good to go.

Short Pin up Hairstyles 2013

Short Pin up Hairstyles 2013

I have fairly short hair and I always get stuck doing hairstyles. It's not a very good cut in the first place to style (short on the sides and a long part on top - bad choice). So I usually curl it and do 2 elevated pin curls on top with one side of my hair tucked away behind my ear and the rest hanging on the other side. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas I could try to change it up a little.

Short Pin up Hairstyles 2013: Wanting to rock a pinup hairstyle is common, but actually pulling it off is something else altogether. Although those cute ‘50s pinups might look as if they put next to no effort into their hair, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Pinup looks take work to get and maintain, but you too can show ‘em off with the help of a few basic accessories and products.

Waves of Hollywood

The soft, wavy look of old Hollywood is a great one for short hair. It works best if your hair is naturally straight, but if you have curls, you can also get the look by first spending some quality time with your flatiron. Pin most of your hair back and then unpin in wide sections, curling each with a wide iron. Finish by pressing hair flat against your head and securing with bobby pins or barrettes.

Pixie Cutie

The pixie cut, with short bangs and feminine layers, is another classic rockabilly look. Have a beautician cut your bangs to a Hepburn-like length, or sweep them to the side and pin them behind the top of your cheekbones to fake the effect. To accentuate the curves of your neckline and jaw structure, work serum into your short layers and ruffle them just slightly. Add red lipstick, and you’re good to go!

The Shaved Head

Nothing says punk and rockabilly quite like a shaved head, but it takes a woman with guts to actually get one. If you can manage to take the plunge, you’ll be rewarded with a ‘do that emphasizes your facial structure, complexion and eye color. If shaving off all your hair still sounds too terrifying, you can get a punkier look that’s still pinup worthy by shaving just a portion of your head under longer hair or going for a Mohawk-inspired style that lets one extended wave of hair flop to the side of your head.

Perfect Pompadour

Short Pin up Hairstyles 2013: A pompadour is a classic pinup look that can be hard to achieve. It’ll certainly turn heads, but it’s not worth tearing your own gorgeous hair out in an effort to get it absolutely perfect. Although it’s easier to rock a pompadour with medium to long hair, you can also do it with shorter locks. Latrice Strader, a master hairstylist, tells "Essence" magazine that all you need for the look is a bottle of hairspray, a rat-tail comb, and a five-inch section of hair. “Use the comb to tease four inches out of the five, leaving out the first inch by your hairline,” she says. “Smooth the piece back over the teased section, secure with bobby pins, and mist with a light holding spray.”

  4. Tease the hair at the crown of the head with a fine-toothed comb and smooth the hair in front over top. Use bobby pins to hold the bump in the hair.

Pin up Hairstyles for Short Hair 2013

Pin up Hairstyles for Short Hair 2013

I love "old" hair. No, not the hair that you find in the bottom of your shower drain that has been there for months, I mean hair right out of a pin-up girl calendar. Beautiful hairstyles with a vintage flair. I think these styles work especially well for fall when you won't mind the hair being down on your neck or across your forehead. Having short to medium length hair though, it is not always easy to find pin-up girl hairstyles that work. I was searching for some the other day that I want to try out this fall and thought I would share them with all of you.

1. Curly Pin-Up Girl Tutorial with a Bump

This hairstyle is adorable and looks pretty simple. I curl my hair a lot in the fall now and this can be turned into a simple retro look with the addition of a bump on top. Great tutorial and the girl who does it is adorable.

2. Marilyn Monroe Inspired Hair Tutorial

This is a little more advanced than the tutorial above, but I love the look and if I can pull it of with my hair being a little longer than hers, I think it will look fabulous!

3. Pin-Up Girl Victory Rolls Tutorial

I love the look of victory rolls and if I had known they were so easy to do, I would have tried them out a long time ago. This is a great tutorial and the girl doing it has fairly short hair. I have seen these done with shorter hair though too, so if yours is shorter, I say go for it!

4. Multiple Rolls Pin-Up Girl Inspired Hair Tutorial

Pin up Hairstyles for Short Hair 2013: This one would be easier for someone with medium to short hair that is at least below the ears. I really love this look, but have the hardest time getting bobby pins to take, so I am not sure if I can pull it off. I think the problem is that I am too lax with the hairspray. It is an adorable style though that uses multiple victory rolls.
